Prayer Study Group

by Richard Foster

These groups commenced in September 2018 and have now concluded.

In His classic book ‘Prayer, the heart’s true home’ Richard Foster writes; “We today yearn for prayer and hide from prayer. We are attracted to it and yet repelled by it. We believe prayer is something we should do, even something we want to do; but it seems as if a chasm stands between us and actually praying. We are not quite sure what holds us back. Of course we are busy with work and family and church obligations, but that is only a smokescreen. Our busyness seldom keeps us from eating of sleeping or pleasures. No, there is something deeper, more profound keeping us in check……”

“Today the heart of God is an open wound of love. He aches over our distance and our preoccupation. He wonders that we do not draw near to him. He longs for our presence. For too long we have been in a far off country of climb and push, a country of frustration and fear. He welcomes us home and he is inviting you and me to come home. To come home to where we belong. To come home to that for which we were created. His arms are stretched out wide to receive us; his heart is enlarged to take us in. A home of serenity, peace and joy. A home of friendship and fellowship and openness. A home of acceptance and affirmation. He invites us into the living room of his heart where we can put on old slippers and share freely. The key to this home, this Heart of God, is prayer.

Perhaps you have never prayed before except in anguish or terror, it may be that the only time the Divine Name has been on your lips has been in angry expletives. Never mind. I am here to tell you that the Father's heart is open wide - you are welcome to come in. Perhaps you do not believe in prayer, you may have tried to pray and been profoundly disappointed and disillusioned. You seem to have little faith or none. It does not matter, the Father's heart is open wide - you are welcome to come in

Perhaps you are bruised and broken by the pressures of Life, others have wronged you and you feel scarred for Life. You have old painful memories that have never been healed; you avoid prayer because you feel too distant to unworthy. Do not despair, the Father's heart is open wide - you are welcome to come in.

Perhaps you have prayed for many years but the words have grown brittle and cold. Little ever happens anymore, God seems remote and inaccessible. Listen to me.. the Father's heart is open wide - you are welcome to come in…. “

The aim of this short group is to follow this book. Just 6 sessions of 1 hour each, similar to the Lent groups. The group will then finish. We will read a chapter of the book in our own time and simply get together to discuss any thoughts and experiences over a cuppa and cake.

If anyone would rather have one-one chats going through the book just let me know!

Please let me know if you are planning to attend – books will then be provided.
